Trends in ICPD Categories

At the onset of the ICPD in 1994, the majority of all expenditures was on family planning and reproductive health. These expenditures accounted for 70 percent of total population and AIDS expenditures. Since then, the growing AIDS epidemic has caused a shift in expenditures to STD/HIV/AIDS activities. In 2002, STD/HIV/AIDS expenditures made up 43 percent of total population and AIDS expenditures.

Project and Programme Types

Between fiscal years 1996 and 2002, the RF project has collected information on around 56,000 projects and programmes, from both donors and developing countries and countries in transition (DC/CiT). The survey includes questions for each project/programme on title, country of implementation, duration and disbursed amount. A question that is not often filled in is the type of project/programme. For only 7,600 projects/programmes, respondents have indicated this information: 4,936 were reported by donors and 2,664 by DC/CiT.

OECD/DAC Members Contributions to the Largest Intermediate Organisations

A significant share of OECD/DAC funds for population and AIDS activities flows to developing countries and countries in transition through multilateral organisations, international NGOs, universities and research institutes. In 2002, 25 percent of a total of US$ 3.1 billion donor funds was transferred directly to developing countries and countries in transition governments, whereas 57 and 18 percent were channelled through NGOs (international and national) and multilateral organisations respectively.
